Free stuff. Journalism cool factor. Here's a list of some of the cooler -- and weirder -- items that have landed in my inbox recently:
1. An autographed copy of the International Travel Health Guide
2. A big muslin bag of Big Time Blueberry Pancakes from CuliNika
3. A Rusk Ceramic hairdryer (that gives me rock star hair... seriously)
4. A PerDomo cigar
5. Funky Lowepro press pass and pen holder
6. A stethoscope - seriously. From DuraMed (I write regularly for a health care publication). Which was way weird, but we all played with it in the office for an hour. lub-dub, lub-dub...(I'm still alive)
Not to mention dinner at Max's with a bunch of old guys!
Yes! Another JCF - meeting new people constantly and even getting to enjoy
some linguine now and again... :)
Best thing I ever got at work: when I was with the Waterbury
Republican-American, I interviewed a missionary to Kenya who had just
returned to the area. It was a great conversation, and I totally respected
this guy's work (I have an evangelical background myself, although I'm no
longer one), and maybe that came through to him, because he gave me a
carved wooden letter opener he had picked up in Africa. That was about 10
years ago, and I keep it in my desk to this day. I like meeting people who
do more to help people than I do, which is just about everyone.
