The Lyon public market is open Tuesday through Sunday, its largest day being the latter, when I attended. It's located on the banks of La Saone, the so-called 'other river' in Lyon, running parallel to Le Rhone. It includes fresh produce, meats, flowers, cheese, honey, oils, and other foods, as well as a book market and an arts and crafts market. It's also one of the most congested areas of Lyon on a Sunday, as I discovered -- residents, chefs, tourists, and vendors

cram into a small sidewalk-sized area to view or sell wares, and the cacophony is something to behold. Everwhere are sellers trying to outdo their counterparts with shouts like 'Les Bon Poulet! C'est poulet les meillures!' and 'Regardez mes bouquets jolies... c'est tres jolie, les fleurs.'

It was truly the best representation of the gastronomic capital of France - better than the plates set before us. This, in essence, is where it all starts.
As far as the arts portion of the market goes, it ranges from handcrafts to fine art to little chotchkes. I bought a small painting for our house, featuring Parc La Tete D'or, which I've blogged about in recent posts. And it all happens in Vieux Lyon, the old city, amidst these awesome historic ateliers. Incroyable!
