I was first introduced to WHY Louisville when on a press trip covering Lebowskifest. The fest's founder also owns this eclectic little place. Check out his stuff, and thanks Will for providing the RTT of the week.

About WHY Louisville

WHY Louisville opened its doors in June of 2005 at 1609-1/2 Bardstown Road in the heart of Louisville's independent business district, The Highlands. It began when owner Will Russell (31) realized he was surrounded by several creative people who had many interesting projects but no single place to showcase them. WHY Louisville is a retail hub designed to support Louisville's creative community. The store carries merchandise from locally-based projects like Lebowski Fest and Bejeezus Magazine and feature shirts designed by local artists such as Kathleen Lolley, Bill Green, Patrick Jilbert, Jason Pierce, Danny Cash and many more.

The store's "Artist Submission Program" is set up in a way that artists can get their design printed without incurring the high cost of printing. If a submitted design is chosen to be printed, WHY Louisville pays the printing costs and sells the shirts in the store and online at www.WHYLouisville.com. The artist gets a significant portion of the sale price for every shirt sold. Many of the shirts are printed on high-quality, sweatshop free American Apparel clothes.

In addition to showcasing the design talent of local artists on t-shirts, hoodies and onesies, WHY Louisville carries many one-of-a-kind gifts, also known as "What-Have-You" (which is where the WHY in the store's name comes from.) WHY Louisville scours antique malls, flea markets and yard sales to find vintage knick knacks, pop-culture memorabilia and kitschy local souvenirs for that unique gift you just can't get at the mall.  With the iconic seven foot tall "Beerwolf" statue that greets customers at the door, WHY Louisville is gaining a reputation as the weirdest little gift shop in town.

WHY Louisville is open seven days a week at 1609-1/2 Bardstown Road near Bonnycastle, Monday through Saturday 11:30 am to 7:30 pm and Sundays Noon to 6:00 pm. Online shopping is available at www.WHYLouisville.com, as well as a local concert calendar, Beerwolf photo gallery and the Artist Submission form. (502) 459-5522
